Revival—oh that it might be our time!
We are quite overdue, agree?! Just watch the news or reflect on what’s missing. It almost goes without saying that a revival is needed. Any revival of sorts but I’ve learned that any revival must start with me. Not the voting polls or the Federal Reserve. Those are external and never enough. I’m wanting and overdue for the deep work of God in the depth of who I am. Something caught by the ancient Psalmist when he cried….”out of the depths, I cry to you, Oh Lord” And then in hope he waited. I want for revival of thought and action to robustly spring up through the winter of my soul.
Maybe this is what is currently happening at Asbury University, Wilmore, KY. ** I am wanting and praying for the Spirit winds to blow upon those hearts (and mine!) that are truly humbled, not just wounded by sin and shame but outright broken to Godly sorrow. Yes, and for what purpose? It is not for emotional ecstasy. Oh no! Rather it is so that we might be rekindled to more fully prize what is offered in Christ; His great forgiveness at great cost for the deep privilege of reconciliation with God. In the words of theologian, cleric, and writer J.I.Packer…
“Times of revival bring a deep sense of being always in God’s sight; spiritual things become overwhelmingly real, and God’s truth becomes overwhelmingly powerful, both to wound and to heal; conviction of sin becomes intolerable; repentance goes deep; faith springs up strong and assured; spiritual understanding grows quick and keen; and converts mature in a very short time. Christians become fearless and tireless in their Savior’s service.”
Oh that it might be our revival time and might we humbly pray, “let it begin with me”.
